- [The Shared Responsibility of Education](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/uncategorized/the-shared-responsibility-of-education/): I've been having interesting discussions with my friends and family recently about the change in education since I went through high school. I was always confronted by my transition from being a student to being a teacher. I started teaching in a serious capacity when I was 19 years old, my oldest students were only a few years younger than me. A very confronting thing I came across was that I remembered what it was like to be a student, and I had to integrate into a system of education that didn't share the same values I had towards personal growth and education. This is probably what a lot of young teachers find when they start teaching. There's a dissonance between remembering what school was like and wanting to be a better influence than your teachers, and the reality of the education system. A strong belief I've built in my time teaching is that there is a triangle of shared responsibility between parents, teachers and students. Maybe this is a belief shared by many teachers still today, but I feel like the way it's been implemented is different today than it was when I went through school. I feel like values have changed and the balance of power between students, parents and teachers has shifted.

Up until that point I've been referencing it to a lot of my students and I think they were curious but didn't entirely understand what I was talking about. Then came the new iteration of my junior percussion ensemble and I decided to really methodically follow the steps of my book and apply these principles to the ensemble setting. I started by setting a group goal with them that they were involved in setting. They set the parameters of the goal, and they set the time frame for it (with my assistance of course) but they guided the process. They all closed their eyes and imagined themselves onstage, performing our pieces to an audience of family and friends. They imagined playing their parts effortlessly and with beautiful technique and tone.
- [Soar – Harmonic whirlies chorale – Graduating Recital 2015](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/performance-2/soar-graduating-recital-2015/): I decided to finish my graduating recital surrounded by my friends in the QCGU percussion department. Inspired by my chorale for harmonic whirlies, ‘The Angels are Coming’, I wrote a chorale for 12 players. I’ve gone through a fantastic journey surrounded great people and I thought it’d only be fitting to work with my friends from the percussion department to symbolise that journey. This was the last piece of the recital, performed by Ba Da Boom percussion around the audience of the conservatorium theatre. It was a dream come true for me for this piece both compositionally and as a performance!
- [Eight On 3 And Nine On 2 – Graduating Recital 2015](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/percussion-2/eight-3-nine-2/): Eight on 3 and Nine on 2 by George Clements and Robert Marino is a multi percussion duet. The piece combines drum corps elements into a challenging formal recital piece for any percussionist. Two players perform the piece facing each other, sharing instruments just as they share in playing almost every rhythm in the piece. The listener is engaged aurally and visually as both performers sound like one in an exciting and captivating percussive showcase.
- [More Marimba Dances – Graduating Recital 2015](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/percussion-2/marimba-dances-2-graduating-recital-2015/): Continuing the challenge of playing Ross Edwards' pieces, I decided to also play 'More Marimba Dances' by the Australian composer. Dancers Grace Miel and Juwai Pitkin joined me for this set of dances as well.
- [Rhythm Magic – Graduating Recital 2015](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/percussion-2/rhythm-magic-graduating-recital-2015/): Rhythm Magic is a rudimental-style snare drum solo written  by Australian master drummer and percussionist David Jones. It features many interesting sticking patterns and rhythmic groupings and my mate Lachlan Hawkins and I arranged it last year for his honours recital.

I played the first movement of the piece for my audition and only realised through the years that not only was there more to Marimba Dances, there was also ‘More Marimba Dances’ by Ross Edwards.

XY was the challenge of a lifetime and sort of like a movie where the character has to endure through a hard task to find that afterwards everything makes sense. Only in a movie it takes a montage and in real life it takes a lot of time!

It was an exhilarating experience to play some music that I have been waiting to perform for years and to share the stage with my dad, my best friends Lachlan Hawkins and Jamee Seeto, my brothers from Spankinhide, Elliott Orr and Piers Langford, choreographers and dancers Grace Miel and Juwai Pitikin and finally the whole Queensland Conservatorium Percussion department. I chose to present a concert showcasing my musical journey from the beginning to the present and perform it with the people I care about and have admired for a long time.
- [Flying Pepper Charity Concert](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/news/flying-pepper-concert/): SoundStruck has been invited to perform at the Flying Pepper Cafe & Restaurant at Rochedale to raise funds for recent tragedies in Tonga and Cambodia. I'll be joined by Lachlan, Tom and Andy to perform our signature bucket jams, choreographed drumming pieces and paint drumming! This concert will also showcase a bit of Lachlan's handpan music as SoundStruck plays a bit of mellow music and we take up a bit of auxilary percussion.
- [Spankinhide African Drumming – Semester 1 Recital 2015](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/percussion-2/spankinhide-african-drumming-semester-1-recital-2015/): The debut of Spankinhide in my time at the Conservatorium! I decided to bring Elliott and Piers, my bandmates from Spankinhide, to play some African drumming in my recital and share a part of my musical background. The great thing about being in my final year at uni was being able to choose what I wanted to play and to play some unconventional things.

He'll be premiering his compositions for handpan and collaborating with other instrumentalists on original music. I will be joining in on some handpan and percussion.

- [‘Marimbics’ Marimba Solo – Semester 1 Recital 2015](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/percussion-2/marimbics-marimba-solo/): MARIMBICS by Markus Halt is a four-mallet marimba solo that I have interpreted as the ‘Marimba Olympics’. Each section of the piece challenges the performer to play with different technique and cope with changing ‘tonal worlds’. It is a trip down the rabbit hole involving high technical demand and quirky musical ideas.
- [Suomineito – Vibraphone solo – Semester 1 Recital 2015](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/performance-2/suomineito-vibraphone-solo/): Suomineito is a four-mallet vibraphone solo written by Nebojša Jovan Živković. Suomineito in Finnish, in the language of the "Suomi" people (as the Finns calls themselves) means "Finnish girl". This quiet and melancholic composition was inspired by an original folk song from Finland, called "Heili Karjalasta". In Suomi, this means "a friend from Karelia", a region that used to be a part of Finland.
- [Meditation No 1 – Snare drum solo – Semester 1 Recital 2015](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/performance-2/meditation-no-1-snare-drum-solo/): MEDITATION NO. 1 by Casey Cangelosi is a snare drum solo that was commissioned by Majestic for the U.S. release of the Prophonic snare series. This unique solo employs a variety of contemporary techniques, like the use of hands, different striking places on the rim and gestures. It is a very visual piece that aims to captivate the audience’s eyes as well as their ears.
- [Kenmore State High School Performs ‘Etna’](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/composition-2/kenmore-state-high-school-performs-etna/): For their end of year concert in 2015, the Kenmore State High School Percussion Ensemble at their annual event 'Kenmore up Late', performed my paint drumming composition 'Etna'! I was invited by their percussion teacher Tania Savage to come and spend time with the group in a photoshoot for the local paper and later on for one rehearsal before the concert.

It was specifically one of our 'dry' rehearsals that was more focused on getting the piece memorised and the movements down.

Each year the heads of department at the conservatorium nominate students to represent their department in this competition and I was very honored to be chosen this year to represent the percussion department!

It was amazing to see such a fantastic championship and pretty inspiring to see such talented athletes and dedicated swimmers.

It's a simple composition with a groove, fill and a solo for each part. Each part can be spread across large groups of students, or with just a few improving percussion students. Instrumentation: Any available instrument with a head, or novelty items which can make two contrasting sounds.

- [In Africa](https://www.tsoofbaras.com/music/africa/): In Africa depicts the sunrise and sunset of the savannahs of Africa. The beginning signifies the rustling of the leaves and grass in the morning and slowly brings in the marimba as the theme ‘a day’. The rest of the piece introduces themes to signify the various animals/wildlife and, being inspired by the opening of the Lion king, the circle of life. The change to the minor brings the turn of the afternoon and the results of the morning hunt. Following the climax of the evening, the piece retires to its beginning hinting the beginning of the next day. It is a long and quiet ending signifying the contrast between the expected length of a sunset and the real time it actually takes for the sun to set and the light to fade.
