Storm the Gate: Drumming Ensemble Music for 4 Players
Storm the Gate was born from a common frustration: the gap between pieces that are too simple and those that are too complex. This high-energy drumming ensemble music was composed specifically to provide a rewarding challenge for Beginner groups, focusing on rhythmic drive and ensemble precision.
Inspired by Taiko and Funk
This beginner percussion quartet draws inspiration from the powerful, grounded nature of Taiko drumming and the syncopated “pocket” of funk. It pays homage to the legendary Kevin Tuck and his classic works, aiming to become a staple in your school’s percussion library.
The emphasis of Storm the Gate is on the feel of the rhythm. Drawing from Latin and African drumming traditions, the parts are designed to lock together, teaching students how to listen across the ensemble and prioritize the groove over clinical accuracy.
Instrumentation & Classroom Use
Written for 4 players, the standard instrumentation includes:
- Concert Toms
- Snare Drum
- Kick Drum
As with many of my drumming ensemble music compositions, the goal is for the ensemble to have fun while building foundational skills. It’s an ideal performance piece for school concerts where you want to showcase energy and teamwork.
