Chicken and a Biscuit: Drumming Ensemble Music for 6 Players
Chicken and a Biscuit is an fun piece of drumming ensemble music written specifically for intermediate students. Based on the catchy mnemonic for ti-ka-ti-ka ti-ti (1e+a 2+), this intermediate percussion sextet turns a fundamental rhythmic building block into a high-energy performance piece.
Inspiration from Samba and West Africa
This composition draws heavily on traditional drumming styles, including Samba and West African Djembe traditions. It pays homage to influential Brisbane composers John Parker and Tania Savage, whose works have long been staples of the high school percussion scene.
Like many of my compositions, the focus here is on the “pocket.” The parts are designed to lock together, teaching students to hear the interaction between lines and prioritise the collective groove over individual accuracy.
Instrumentation & Ensemble Flexibility
Written for 6 players, the standard instrumentation includes:
- Snare Drum
- 4 Concert Toms
- Kick Drum
This piece is a highly versatile addition to any drumming ensemble music library. The rhythms are accessible yet engaging, and parts can easily be doubled or adapted for larger groups or available instruments, making it a reliable choice for school concerts and assessments.
