Description
Straits of Gibraltar is a cinematic, large-scale work of advanced percussion ensemble music for 12 players. Originally composed for the FCIP Senior Percussion Ensemble in 2021, this piece serves as a vibrant musical journey through the fusion of cultures, trade, and history that surround the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern corridors.
Cultural Fusion & Instrumentation
Drawing inspiration from the bustling energy of a Middle Eastern bazaar and the vastness of the desert, this contemporary percussion music explores exotic tonalities and driving world rhythms. To achieve its rich, textured sound, the piece requires an expansive instrumentation:
- Mallets: 2 x 4.3 Octave Marimbas, 2 x Vibraphones, Xylophone, Glockenspiel/Bells.
- Drums: Timpani, 4 Concert Toms, Drum Set.
- World & Auxiliary: Darbuka or Djembe, Shakers, Suspended Cymbal, Tambourine, Wind Chimes.
Ideal for Senior Ensembles & Festivals
Designed for Intermediate/Advanced groups, Straits of Gibraltar offers a sophisticated challenge for senior high school and university ensembles. The interweaving of traditional percussion with hand-drumming (Djembe/Darbuka) creates a unique sonic palette that stands out in competition and festival settings.
With its driving grooves and evocative melodies, this piece will be a highlight of your advanced percussion repertoire.
