My university has one week each semester that it devotes to a break from classes and masterclasses for students. They call it Project Week and since the end of last year it hasn’t been the best in terms of relevant masterclasses for instrument specializations.
This year they decided to host a duo competition for students saying that the duos each had to perform on the same type of instrument. Each on a violin as opposed to two on the same one haha. They also asked for a bit of flair in the performance and my friend Lachlan Hawkins and I were more than happy to oblige! There were 2 iPad minis as a prize!!
With only a week to go until the comp, Locky and I decided we’d apply and do a body percussion duo together. We said each of us would come up with a groove to work with and that we’d workshop it closer to the day of the performance. What we were left with was about three grooves and two rehearsal times before a chance to be on stage.
I was very happy to work with Locky as usual, he’s a fantastic musician and a really great friend. We ended up getting unofficial second for the competition which we were pretty happy about haha but still hoping for first, congratulations to Liam and Eliza for their violin duo that got them the first prize.
The piece is called LoopStack and is quite heavily choreographed. We made an effort to include some modern influences and get the audience involved. There’s some Girl from Ipanema, Indian Tala and even a bit of samba patterns.
Enjoy!
